Warriors' David Lee Hospitalized After 2nd Surgery

Warriors power forward David Lee had his second surgical procedure to flush out an infection in his left elbow Monday, setting off a whirlwind of speculation as to how the injury was initially treated.

In a unique move by the Warriors, who are usually guarded when it comes to injuries, they made the doctor available to the media Tuesday. Dr. Bill Maloney said that the infection probably could not have been avoided, then explained the treatment process and offered a glowing outlook for Lee's recovery.

Lee had his first surgery performed Friday in Fremont by Dr. Frank Chen and was released the next day. By Sunday, he was back at the hospital - this time heading to Stanford.

Lee, Golden State's $80 million man, was still hospitalized at Stanford Hospital on Tuesday for further treatment and monitoring.

Breaking News: JaMarcus Russell Contacted By Miami Dolphins

Both Chad Pennington and Chad Henne are likely out for the remainder of the season, according to PFW Dolphins correspondent and Sun Sentinel reporter Omar Kelly. Each quarterback was injured in Miami's 29-17 Week 10 victory vs. the Titans.

Chad Pennington's shoulder and Chad Henne's knee weren't able to make it through Sunday's Dolphins-Titans game, and though third-stringer Tyler Thigpen managed well in their absence, Miami will clearly need to add depth at the position if those injuries are of the long-term variety.

Given the circumstances, the Dolphins have reached out to the well-rested JaMarcus Russell, according to Inside the NFL's Josina Anderson.

Russell recently worked out for the Washington Redskins and has spent his time off in Houston exercising with famed athlete-rehabilitator and former NBA coach John Lucas.

Henne & Pennington "More Than Likely" Done For Season

Miami Gardens — Tony Sparano said he had "no idea" who his starting quarterback would be Thursday night against the Bears, but it looks like his choices have been narrowed to one: Tyler Thigpen.

According to a source, both Chad Pennington and Chad Henne are "more than likely" out for the season after suffering serious injuries in Sunday's 29-17 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Chad Henne left the locker room on crutches and had a 6:30 p.m. MRI scheduled on his left knee, which was twisted while throwing an incompletion late in the third quarter. Henne said his kneecap was pushed to the side on the play.

Pennington opened the game with his first start since Week 3 of 2009 but injured his thrice surgically repaired right shoulder on the first play of the game. He stayed in for one more play before leaving for good.

Pennington did not speak to reporters after the game. A Dolphins spokesman said Pennington did not "want to be a distraction," but talk was he was understandably distraught by this turn of his events.

Pennington was hit by Titans defensive end Jason Babin on a stunt off the left side. Right tackle Vernon Carey missed the block, and Babin shoved Pennington to where his follow-through caused his right arm to hit left tackle Jake Long.

Pennington stayed in for one more play, hitting Brian Hartline for 19 yards, before calling a timeout and removing himself from the game.

Still, the Knicks are going to do their due diligence, just in case the Suns are actually interested in moving the face of their franchise. The Knicks "will make an inquiry," one team source said regarding Nash's possible availability.

"If you can do something to make the team better, you do it," team president Donnie Walsh said, speaking in general terms about trades after the team's practice Saturday in Greenburgh. "That's pretty obvious. But in the meantime, you've got to play games, you've got to play the right way, you've got to get better and that's where we are."

Report: Brandon Roy's Career In Jeopardy

OKLAHOMA CITY -- It would be easy to exhale today knowing that a noted Los Angeles doctor on Friday declared there is no need to operate on the aching left knee of Trail Blazers star Brandon Roy.

And it would be easy to rejoice that Roy is back to his old, game-impacting self after he led the Blazers with 24 points in Friday's thrilling, hard-fought 110-108 loss at Oklahoma City.

Come to think of it, go ahead and do both while you can.

Because, before anyone gets too carried away with the second opinion of Dr. Neal ElAttrache, take a deep breath, swallow hard and realize the reason no surgery was recommended:

There's no meniscus left to operate on in Roy's left knee.

"Nah. None. Not in my right, either," Roy said Friday.

The reason Roy's knee has been swelling up regularly, to the point where it has already been drained twice by Blazers' doctor Don Roberts this season, is because there is no cartilage to absorb the pounding associated with running and jumping.

"The problem is bone-on-bone there," Roy said. "Dr. Roberts calls it 'arthritic knee.' It's just something I'm going to have to deal with for the rest of my career."
"In talking to (Dr. ElAttrache), I asked if it could get any worse," Roy said. "He said there's a chance, but he doesn't think so. But there's no curing it. He said there are players who have worked with it. You just have to take the medication and monitor it."

In the meantime, it's likely we have seen the end of the old Brandon Roy. The one who switched hands in mid-air while making a driving layin in traffic against Toronto two seasons ago. The one who attacked the lane and finished a game-winner against the Knicks. The one who lept high and blocked a Carmelo Anthony jumper with his finger tip to preserve a victory.

There will be a lot more jumpers. A lot more post-ups. There will still be drives -- he beat his man a couple times in the fourth quarter on Friday -- but they will be more calculated and measured.

For the past week, that has been a hard thing for Roy to swallow. But after talking with family and friends, he came to realize it was a reality.

On Friday, with his mind no longer thinking about microfracture, and the swelling in his knee subsided enough to give him some freedom on the court, he started to embrace his new career.

"I could see myself coming in the fold now," Roy said.

Julius Erving "I could beat all the forwards in the league"

Q: If you were in your prime playing against LeBron James, who would win in a one-on-one pick up game?
Erving: “You’re never going to put a player ahead of yourself who plays the same position. So I think as far as forwards and centers are concerned, you know I would always say that I could figure out a way to beat all the forwards and the guards. The centers would be a problem because of the height if they got in the paint you can’t neutralize them. One on one with a center if they can back you down, then they’re probably going to win the ball game if they play any type of defense at all. But I say all the forwards and the guards in the league, in my prime, I should be able to beat them all so he would be included in there.

Brandon Marshall Guarantees Playoff Berth

Brandon Marshall just guaranteed the Miami Dolphins will be in the playoffs this season.

"Oh, yeah, absolutely," Marshall said when asked if he was guaranteeing a playoff berth.

"I don't know how many wins it's going to take," he continued, "but we'll be there at the end."

Marshall is not blind. He recognizes the team is struggling. The Dolphins are 4-4. And Marshall characterized Miami's offensive performances so far as, "up and down."

But ... the confidence. The ever-loving confidence peeks through eventually.

"Any minute now, we're going to put it all together," he said.

By the way, wiseguys, Marshall meant he guarantees a playoff berth this year not some day. Just in case some of you get cute.

By the way, Marshall isn't the only person in the NFL exuding confidence today. At New York Jets training facility, coach Rex Ryan was back to his old Hard Knocks ways.

"We have more talent than anybody," he said during his press conference. "I expect to win every game."

Which one is more likely to be true?

LeBron James Questions Spoelstra's Lineups

The second of two bad home losses didn't bring out the best in the Heat. "For myself, 44 minutes is too much," James declared. "I think Coach Spo knows that. Forty minutes for D-Wade is too much. We have to have as much energy as we can to finish games out." There you go, Coach Spo. Get to know him well. ... No one exposes the flaws of these Heat like the Celtics with their brilliant passing, precise shooting and ferocious physical play. Boston believes it can bully these Heat, believes they're susceptible to games of the mind and body.

Jackson: Heat, Not Lakers, Could Win 70 Games

Lakers coach Phil Jackson says that the Heat, and not his club, could finish this season with 70 victories.

"It's not going to happen [for us]," Jackson said. "The schedule's too tough. The travel is extenuating in the Western Conference, there's very difficult time zone changes that you go through and all the stuff that happens. And that's disregarding the idea that you can play with all your players for the rest of the season.

"Everything has to just break perfect for that to happen, plus the team has to be very, very resilient and very, very capable of filling in for one another at multiple positions."

Jackson led Chicago to an NBA-record 72-10 record during the 1995-96 season.

"We have a team that's an older team and we probably don't have to push for [72-10]," Jackson said. "That's not what's important about our season. Our season is to maintain a balance and hopefully have distance [between us and the rest of the field] and can finish in a position where it would be the best advantage for us in the playoffs.

"It's a lot of fun to win a lot of games, but ultimately, as Ronny Harper made a T-shirt up, '72-10 don't mean a thing if you don't win the ring.' And so, that's what it's all about."

Jackson does believe that Miami is talented enough to accomplish the feat.

"They're talented enough to do that," he continued. "They may not be deep enough quite yet or have all their persons in place and teamwork just down, but if they stay together, they have a good chance. They have a very talented team."

Dwyane Wade: "We're The Best 5-4 Team"

We are 5-4 and we can’t run from it. I think we’re better than 5-4. We’re the best 5-4 team in the league, how about that? But we’ve got a lot of work to do.’’

Dana White: Lesner vs. Mir III Probably Next

News

12/11/10 - Lesnar-Mir III on the cards, likely to be Lesnar's next match

Brock Lesnar’s next fight is likely to be a rubber match with Frank Mir, according to UFC president Dana White.

Lesnar lost the UFC heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 and White has ruled out an immediate rematch, because there was no ambiguity about the loss.

“There won’t be an immediate rematch, there is no need for one,” White said today. “After the fight Brock took some time off to go hunting; he and I haven’t spoken since the fight so I’m not sure what he wants to do next.”

Asked if the rumours about Lesnar asking for Roy Nelson had any basis in fact, White shook his head.

“He never asked for Roy Nelson, that’s not true. The last thing I did hear was that he wants to fight Frank Mir again. That fight kind of makes sense so… We will probably see Lesnar fight Mir next, I think that the rubber match makes sense.”

White also said that Velasquez’s first title defence will “probably” be Junior Dos Santos. The Brazilian is undefeated in the UFC and been speaking of his desire to challenge for the title recently. White did not give a potential date for the fight.

Pryor: I'll Return To Ohio State For Senior Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Despite saying earlier this week that he'd like to play basketball again, Ohio State (No. 9 BCS, No. 8 AP) quarterback Terrelle Pryor is committed to football and has enjoyed his almost three years with the Buckeyes.

He's liked it so much, in fact, he swears he'll be back for his senior year.

"I'm a Buckeye until I break all the records," he said during preparations for the Buckeyes' showdown on Saturday at Ohio Stadium against Penn State.

The junior said he had no intention -- at least right now -- of jumping into the NFL draft.

"I feel like I want to get my degree and finish off strong and maybe have a better season next year with no losses," he said. "I love being here and I need to develop more knowledge as a human being and not worry about money and stuff like that.

"My mom works a little bit so I can use some of her money, and the money that we get here," Pryor said, referring to his scholarship and stipends that athletes receive for expenses. "I don't really have to worry. I can suffer another year, I just want to gain more knowledge as a human being before I leave."

Pryor recognizes that despite starting for the Buckeyes (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten) for almost three full seasons, he still has some unfinished business.

Plus, he wants to burnish his resume at Ohio State and have his name among the Heisman Trophy winners whose numbers are placed on the facade of the upper deck at Ohio Stadium.

"I want to get my degree, so I can finish that up," Pryor said. "I want to have a legacy here and maybe someday get my jersey hung up. That's one of my goals here as well. I think I just have to develop my brain, develop my mind and the way I'm thinking and how I control situations."

Coach Jim Tressel, who brought Pryor to Ohio State when the 6-foot-6, 235-pound colt was rated the No. 1 recruit in the country, isn't surprised the Jeannette, Pa., native feels that way.

"He is a guy that wants to make a difference for his team," Tressel said. "If he could do anything so that his team would succeed, he would do it."

That's why it was such a shock to some Ohio State followers earlier this week when Pryor sent two curious messages on Twitter.

The two-sport star in high school, who once considered playing both football and basketball in college, tweeted that he missed basketball. Then he tweeted a note to Buckeyes basketball player David Lighty asking if he could say something to hoops coach Thad Matta about Pryor trying out for the team.

A day later, Pryor declined to go into much detail about his feelings of also performing on the court for the fourth-ranked Buckeyes.

"I'm playing football right now," he said unequivocally. "That's it. I was just throwing it out there. I think all the time."

Some Ohio State fans were critical of him for even thinking about another sport when the Buckeyes are faced with a huge game against the Nittany Lions (6-3, 3-2) and have other big tests awaiting at Iowa and at home against archrival Michigan.

Penn State's 83-year-old coach, Joe Paterno, tried hard to keep Pryor in his home state three years ago. Perhaps adding fuel to the fire, JoePa also mentioned Pryor's prowess on the court this week.

"He was a great, great high school player -- and not only as a football player, a heck of a basketball player," Paterno added, without a wink. "We tried everything we could to try to get him to come to Penn State."

Pryor has a bit of history against the massive program in his home state. A year ago, he accounted for all three touchdowns -- breaking the game open with a 62-yard scoring toss to DeVier Posey in the third quarter -- in Ohio State's 24-7 victory in Happy Valley.

A year earlier, the Nittany Lions stopped him on a critical fourth-and-1 situation near midfield late in a 13-6 victory over the Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium. That remains the only home loss for Pryor as a starter.

And it still haunts him.

"I took the Penn State game my freshman year so (hard) that maybe it was like the end of the world that we lost," he said. "I'm from Pennsylvania and I thought it was a big deal, but it's really not. It's the same game, and we're going to have those losses."

The win a year ago helped ease the ache of the loss in 2008.

"Playing there definitely took pressure off my chest," Pryor said. "As I grew up and got older you have time to think a lot. I'm a big thinker and I look back at it as you're playing all these games and if you keep playing this game a long time you're going to take a lot of losses and I'm going to win a lot of games."

He added, "I just look at it as you've got to get on to the next one. That's the way I'm going to view everything -- on to the next thing."

Jerry Jones Hears From Super Bowl Winning Coches About Dallas Job

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said Super Bowl-winning coaches have contacted him about becoming his next head coach, but he hinted that he hopes interim coach Jason Garrett will earn the job on a permanent basis.

"I will say that before I made the decision with Wade Phillips, I had Super Bowl-winning coaches solicit this job," Jones said during his weekly appearance on KRLD-FM.

Jones, who fired Phillips Monday after the Cowboys fell to 1-7, did not elaborate which coaches had contacted him or whether he intended to pursue any of the available coaches with Super Bowl rings -- a group that includes Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, Brian Billick and Tony Dungy.

Jones cut off a follow-up question, suggesting it'd be inappropriate to discuss the issue three days after appointing Garrett as the interim coach.

When Jones introduced Garrett as the interim coach Monday, he emphasized that Garrett would be strongly considered as a long-term candidate if the Cowboys showed promise in the second half of the season. Jones said Friday that Garrett won't necessarily be judged by how many wins the Cowboys have the remainder of the season.

"It's a huge challenge for our team and, of course, a huge challenge for Jason," Jones said. "If he can meet this challenge square on and he can pull his nose up, if he can do things that you see that direction, then that's going to be impressive. Very few people have ever come into a coaching situation with any more challenges.

"We all know his qualities. He's from a great football background. He's got a great background with the Cowboys. I know what he's capable of, his demeanor, how he carries himself, how he approaches. I know all of those things. There's no stranger here for me in Jason Garrett. How the team responds, what we can do on a player-by-player basis, all of those things will weigh into it. I do not have a won-loss percentage in mind or a number of wins that impact what I do in the future."

Garrett was one of 11 coaches who interviewed with Jones after Bill Parcells resigned following the 2006 season. Jones hired Garrett, who won three Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys as Troy Aikman's backup, as the offensive coordinator before hiring Phillips.

Garrett added the[..]istant head coach title and was made the highest-paid[..]istant coach in the league after the 2007 season, when he turned down an offer to become the Baltimore Ravens' head coach. He was also strongly pursued by the Atlanta Falcons that winter. Jones said Friday that Garrett, who also interviewed with the St. Louis Rams and Denver Broncos, has turned down three offers to become a head coach in the past three years.

Jones, who said that Parcells solicited the Cowboys' job in 2003, expects that there will be great interest again in the Dallas vacancy. However, he made it clear he's more concerned about finding the right fit than hiring a coach with a résumé that will impress fans.

"John Madden told me the Cowboys do not need a big-name coach," Jones said. "The Cowboys have a big name. What the Cowboys need is a good coach."

Source: Newton Left Florida Over Cheating scandal

Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton had three different instances of academic cheating while attending the University of Florida and faced potential expulsion from the university, according to a source.

Newton, considered the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, attended Florida in 2007 and 2008 before transferring to Blinn College, a junior college in Texas. He first violated Florida’s student honor code by cheating in a class during his freshman year, according to the source.

Newton was arrested for the theft of a laptop from a Florida student’s dorm room in November 2008. He again violated the university’s honor code by putting his name on another student’s paper and turning it in, according to the source. Newton was caught after the instructor asked the real author of the paper why he had not turned in his work, the source said.

According to the source, after the student said he had turned in a paper, he and the instructor went through all the submissions and discovered that Newton had put his name on the paper in question.

Newton subsequently turned in a second paper to the instructor, but it was later found to have been purchased off the Internet, according to the source. The source said Newton was to appear for a hearing in front of Florida’s Student Conduct Committee during the spring semester of 2009, but instead transferred to Blinn College.

The committee could have levied sanctions against Newton that included suspension and expulsion from the university.

“He knew that he was facing a bad outcome,” the source said.

Auburn officials did not return telephone messages, text messages or e-mails as of late Monday. His father, Cecil Newton Sr., declined to comment on his son’s academic past.

“I wasn’t there,” the elder Newton said. “I cannot confirm or deny. At a time like this, I’m taking a defensive posture.

Last month, Newton, and his father, a pastor, told Sports Illustrated that the younger Newton decided to transfer from Florida in early January 2009 when Tim Tebow opted to remain for his senior year, a move that would have forced Newton into back-up status for another season.

Newton, however, wasn’t even enrolled at Florida for the spring semester of 2009 when he decided to transfer, according to the source.

The revelations of Newton’s academic cheating come less than a week after ESPN.com reported that a man named Kenny Rogers claimed to represent Newton and allegedly sought $180,000 for him to attend Mississippi State. Rogers allegedly told former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond that other schools had already offered $200,000.

The NCAA is investigating that matter. The Newtons and Rogers have denied the allegations.

Auburn has said Newton is eligible, and Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs told USA Today that the school has not found any issues with Newton’s eligibility since starting to look in to it this past summer. But he also said that it’s “not a closed matter” and that the review is “still ongoing.”

The dual threat transferred from Blinn College to Auburn in January and has led the Tigers to a 10-0 record and No. 2 rating in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Newton has thrown for 1,890 yards and 19 touchdowns, while also leading the SEC in rushing with 1,146 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Restraining Order Issued Against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Las Vegas - Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been ordered to stay away from his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and their two children ... as a result of a domestic incident back in September. The boxing champ was not present at the Clark County Courthouse in Las Vegas where the judge issued the ruling.

As we previously reported, Floyd's baby mama Josie Harris claims the boxer beat her up, threatened to kill her and stole her cell phone on September 9. The judge set Floyd's bail at $31,000 -- and stated that she did not believe he was a flight risk. Floyd is due back in court in January.

Mike D'antoni Takes Digs At Former Knicks Star David Lee

With David Lee coming to town Wednesday for his Garden homecoming, Mike D'Antoni appeared to take a dig at the Knicks former big man.

With the Knicks having improved in blocked shots and interior defense over last season, D'Antoni said,

"I don't think it's not a matter of playing hard, just athletically. We got 7-footers who are very athletic. We used to have 6-8 guys who weren't athletic. (Ronny) Turiaf came to us as a shotblocker. (Timofey) Mozgov is 7-1. Amar'e (Stoudemire) blocks shots. (Wilson) Chandler always did. We just have better athletes and taller people. It allows us to play faster. It's not a knock on the other group. They played hard. They weren't athletic enough.''

Lee's downfall with the franchise was an inability to block shots and defend inside.

Celtics Begging Rondo To Take Open Shots

Opposing defenses have a habit of leaving Rajon Rondo open on the perimeter and the Celtics want their point guard taking those shots.

On countless occasions last season, Rondo passed on open jumpers, seeking refuge with a pass to a covered teammate. This year he is snapping those jumpers and burning defenses with his improved range. Rondo is years from being considered a 3-point shooter, but he is more comfortable with the long-range jumper than pundits believe.

"He's wide open," forward Paul Pierce said. "He was open two or three seconds before he even took it. We were begging him to shoot it. Hey, we'll take that, a wide open look. Rondo, he's showed he can make those shots, especially under pressure situations. I take it. I told him after the game, I'll take that shot."

There is still stubbornness in Rondo, a refusal to acknowledge his jumper is a weakness. That teams are blatantly inviting him to shoot is a sign of disrespect for his perimeter game. Teammate Jermaine O’Neal said recently that once Rondo develops a jumper, much like what has been said about Derrick Rose and about Jason Kidd 10 years ago, his game will be impeccable.

Rondo would like to think it’s impeccable now. The white elephant in his mental living room is that darn jumper. It’s improving, but it’s not yet there. It’s there in practice. It has been there during stretches this season, but until he knocks it down with consistency, he will be left alone.

John Miller & Joe Morgan Out On "ESPN: Sunday Night Baseball"

After 20 years in the booth together, Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are on the way out as ESPN’s broadcast team for Sunday Night Baseball. The network has declined to renew Morgan’s contract. Miller is being given the option of staying on as the play-by-play radio voice on Sunday night.

Expectations are that ESPN will turn Miller’s role over to Dan Shulman. Orel Hershiser, who was the third person in the Sunday night booth last season, will likely remain and could be joined by Bobby Valentine, according to the New York Times report.

Morgan’s departure will be welcomed by many. While there’s no doubting his knowledge for the game, his biases and his tendency to repeat himself made him a whipping boy in the stats community for many years. Miller remains among the very best at what he does, but it was probably time for ESPN to bring in some younger blood. Plus, Miller will continue to get plenty of air time with the Giants.

O.J. Mayo Chooses Rondo If Had A Choice Who To Play With (Poor Mike Conley)

Mike Conley is no Rajon Rondo. Just ask one of his teammates.

That's precisely what I did on Saturday, sidling with Memphis' O.J. Mayo to talk about the game's best floor leaders. The Grizzlies shooting guard was waxing poetic on the topic, spinning off of a recent TNT segment in which Kenny Smith ranked the league's best point men. Sure enough, the name of the fourth-year player who recently signed a five-year, $40 million extension for the same team Mayo plays on never came up.

"If I had to choose one to play with, I think it would be (Boston's) Rajon Rondo, just because he gets guys the ball in the right spots," Mayo explained when asked to name the best in the league. "Any scorer or shooter or big man would love to play with a point guard like that."

Jason Whitlock: "Heat Better Off Without Bosh"

By the end of this week, Chris Bosh’s seat might be hotter than Erik Spoelstra’s.

Whenever the Miami Heat lose a game, Twitter erupts with Pat Riley-to-replace-Spoelstra jokes.

Maybe it's true. Or maybe Pat Riley sees what I see. Chris Bosh is too soft to be the third wheel of the “Big Three.” You could see it Friday night when New Orleans center Emeka Okafor stitched clown suits for the Miami bigs in the Heat's second loss of the young season.

A career 13-point scorer, Okafor dropped 26 and 13 on the Heat, sinking 12 of 13 shots. Off the bench, New Orleans reserve power forward Jason Smith, a second-year 7-footer, added 12 points and six boards. Toss in Chris Paul's 19 dimes, and the Hornets pretty much duplicated the formula Boston used to upset Miami -- excellent point guard play (Rajon Rondo 17 assists) and front-court dominance at both ends of the court (51 points and 31 rebounds from Shaq, Big Baby, KG and Paul Pierce).

It’s a formula the Utah Jazz will try to duplicate Tuesday night at AmericanAirlines Arena with Deron Williams, Paul Milsap and Al Jefferson. And then Thursday, the Celtics travel to Miami for a rematch.

This is an important two-game test for Bosh.

We all pretty much agree LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are capable of impersonating Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Does Bosh have any Dennis Rodman, Horace Grant or Charles Oakley in his 6-foot-11, 235-pound frame?

Is Bosh a homeless man’s Dirk Nowitzki, a perimeter big man who put up inflated scoring and rebounding numbers because when visiting NBA players cross the Canadian border they put far more effort into acquiring condoms, loonies and a strip-club champagne room than their on-court assignments?

On the NBA circuit, Toronto is White Vegas, where jungle fever is celebrated by local strippers and escorts 41 times a year. Toronto is a great city to put up numbers and build a rep.

Miami, post-The Decision, is the perfect place to get exposed.

The Heat don’t need a Big Three. Wade and James need a rebounding and defensive goon.

The Great Ones -- particularly finesse players -- always need a Dave Semenko. (Oh, you thought I couldn’t make a hockey analogy?)

Jordan had Oakley and Grant and Rodman. Magic had Rambis. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars had Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn and Rodman. Kobe had Shaq and now he has Ron Artest.

Look at Boston’s “Big Three.” Kevin Garnett is a trash-talking, cheap-shot-taking goon.

James and Wade could both beat up Chris Bosh. The third wheel, especially if he’s a front-court player, can’t be the softest of the trio. It won’t work. It screws up chemistry. It’s going to make the Heat vulnerable to big, strong rebounding and defensive teams.

It allows a good post scorer -- Okafor -- to masquerade as Moses Malone for a night.

Bosh had one rebound against the Hornets. He’s averaging 5.4 boards through seven games -- five fewer than he averaged in White Vegas last season.

Wizards Owner Leonsis says "Gilbert's Not Going Anywhere

Here's how the pattern goes. National or local media member speculates that Gilbert Arenas will be traded, or should be traded, or must be traded. Ted Leonsis goes on the radio or television and says nah, not happening. I transcribe Ted's words, with a brief introduction. And repeat.

So, this week, David Aldridge wrote this in his NBA.com column:

It's also clear that both Arenas and Washington need a divorce, as I said a couple of weeks ago. So, assuming Arenas stays on the floor long enough to show that he's again healthy and can play at a high, if not All-Star, level -- a month? two months? -- the Wizards will almost certainly look to move him along.
And, a day later, Ted Leonsis appeared for an hour with WTOP, and left no doubt where he comes down on the Arenas issue.
"Gilbert's not going anywhere," Leonsis said. "Gilbert is gonna be a big part of this team. Talent wins in the NBA, and I like Gilbert. And the fans like Gilbert. And to be sincere, I had to keep reminding him of that. I think he was nervous about that, and he had to get that first stepping on the court out of the way, and we got over that hurdle and now we can just be about basketball and be about rebuilding the team.

"And there's not a lot of people of talent like Gilbert's in the NBA. I think he's one of the top guards in the league, and John Wall is gonna emerge as a great player, and Hinrich's a good player, and Nick Young's a real good player. It's gonna be important for us to have a very, very strong backcourt, and so now we're past all the speculation and talking. Now it's about performance on the court. Gilbert's got a couple of games under his belt, and I expect really great things from him."

So, put that one to rest. For a day or two.

WTOP's Bruce Alan eventually asked Leonsis about changing the team's name, a requisite question now and forever, and Leonsis answered in his now standard way.

"For the one millionth time, the team's called the Washington Wizards," he said. "And there's a lot of discussion in the fan base and the media about changing the name, and I think that kind of debate is healthy, but my hands are so full with things that need to be done today. And a name change is...very very expensive. It's millions and millions of dollars, and it takes more than two years to implement, and frankly I just decided to have a no-decision. Because if I made a decision, it would alienate one whole quadrant of the fan base, no matter what we did.

"And it also would cost a lot of money, money that I felt we needed to reinvest into infrastructure, into making improvements in the arena. And so there is nothing active going on. I'm not naive to think that it's not a subject that will continue to be talked about, but I'm just asking fans for the benefit of the doubt....As I did my research, I was told that changing colors isn't an expensive endeavor...and so our fans can expect all of the teams that play in the Verizon center at some point to have red white and blue as a motif."

Zach Randolph To Detroit?

Zach Randolph, PF, Memphis His six-year, $84 million contract expires after this season, and a league source says he's not happy that the Grizzlies didn't offer him an extension. Randolph, 29, has put up 20 and 10 in each of the past two seasons and last year shrugged off the loser label by powering Memphis to a 16-win improvement, earning his first All-Star berth. If the Grizzlies, who committed $82 million to Rudy Gay this summer and will have to spend big to retain free agents Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, are looking to deal, multiple sources say Randolph's preferred destination is Detroit, where he would fill the gaping hole in the Pistons' frontcourt.

Matthew Stafford Might Be Lost For Season

Tom Kowalski of MLive.com reports that the Lions fear they may have lost Matthew Stafford for the season due to a Grade 3 separation of his right shoulder.

He had an MRI Monday, but it isn't known if those results, which have been forwarded to Dr. James Andrews, confirm the team's initial diagnosis. Stafford suffered a Grade 2 separation earlier this season that caused him to miss six weeks. As it stands right now, no decision has been made about Stafford's status. If true, it's an unfortunate blow to an offense that really started showing promise with Stafford at the helm.

It's not clear if Shaun Hill, who played well while filling in for Stafford earlier this season, will be ready for Week 10. If he's not, Drew Stanton will get the call. Nov. 9 - 8:14 am et

Packers Release Veteran Cornerback Al Harris

GREEN BAY, Wis.-- The Green Bay Packers have released veteran cornerback Al Harris, cutting short his attempt to return to the field after a serious knee injury.

The 35-year-old Harris is nearly a year removed from a season-ending left knee injury last November. He began this season on the team's physically unable to perform list and returned to practice Oct. 19, giving the Packers a three-week timeline to decide his future.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the move wasn't an indication that the Packers think Harris' playing days are over.

"I think Al Harris will definitely play again in the National Football League," McCarthy said.

Instead, McCarthy said the decision was made with the team's overall roster in mind.

Tramon Williams has emerged as a potential Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback in Harris' absence, and coaches believe rookie Sam Shields can develop into a top cornerback over the next few years.

And if the team were to activate Harris, they would have to release another player -- a move that might hinder them in other areas, particularly on special teams.

"This is not a physical decision," McCarthy said. "This is a big-picture roster decision."

The Packers activated safety Atari Bigby from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday. McCarthy said the team has not yet made a decision on the future of rookie running back James Starks.

Harris started all 102 games he played in for the Packers over seven seasons (2003-09) after being acquired from Philadelphia. He had 14 interceptions and 108 passes defensed during his time in Green Bay.

McCarthy brushed aside any concerns that the move would have a negative effect in the Packers' locker room.

"You look at all those variables," McCarthy said. "With that, you always trust your leadership in your locker room. Al's a veteran player, a popular player. These are decisions that need to be made at different times of the year. We felt that Al had an opportunity to come back from a serious injury, he did an excellent job with his rehab. As far as the locker room, we trust the leadership in the locker room."

With the rest of the team celebrating a 45-7 rout of the Dallas Cowboys, Harris told espnmilwaukee.com late Sunday night that he expected to be released. McCarthy said the final decision wasn't made until Monday morning, and that general manager Ted Thompson was trying to reach him to discuss the move.

"Ted and I both have been very up front with Al all the way through the process," McCarthy said. "Time and time again, he knew what his options were, where we felt that he stood and so forth."

McCarthy thanked Harris for his dedication to the team, and Thompson praised him in a statement.

"We want to thank Al for his contributions to the Green Bay Packers," Thompson said. "His hard work, dedication and professionalism have been the keys to his success. During his time here, he has been a valuable member of our organization and our community. We wish him the very best in the future and he will always be a part of the Packer family."

Chris Bosh Feels Lost In Miami Heat Offense

The conversation was about connection.

Forward Chris Bosh approached teammate LeBron James on Friday night during the Heat's return flight from New Orleans and wanted to talk -- a simple chat between new friends, friends who still had a lot to learn about each other. It was about basketball, but it was also about bonding. Six games into this grand experiment and things were not happening as easily for Bosh as he had originally envisioned.

``I was just honest,'' Bosh said. ``I get a little lost out there because it's different.''

Bosh's numbers are down to begin the season, but he insists that finding himself on the court among his new teammates cannot be measured by statistics. Bosh was averaging 13.3 points and 5.5 rebounds before Saturday's win over the Nets.

He's not the offensive funnel he once was in Toronto -- where he averaged over 22 points in his final five seasons with the Raptors -- but said that doesn't matter.

Publicly, Bosh has said the only statistic he cares about is winning. The Heat (5-2) did not win Friday night and Bosh's reticent demeanor on the court was an obvious factor in the game's outcome.

LACKING AGGRESSION

``I've kind of been on my heels for the first part of the season, so I'm starting to figure it out; it's starting to come to me,'' he said after Saturday's 101-89 victory against the Nets. ``But at the end of the day, I just have to be aggressive. That's what it's all about.''

A day before Saturday's win, Bosh had 15 points but only one rebound and was thoroughly outplayed by Hornets' forward Emeka Okafor, who had 26 points and 13 rebounds.

Afterward, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra voiced his displeasure with his team's energy level and lack of aggressiveness.

Bosh took the constructive criticism to heart. He was lost and needed to improve. He had to reestablish his former self but also find his new role playing alongside James and Dwyane Wade. He needed to have that conversation with James, the team's catalyst.

``I wanted to talk to [James] and really just get to know each other, really,'' Bosh said. ``I think that's an important process of team-building. You have to know the guy who's standing next to you.

``We have a system but at the same time when the game is happening so fast, sometimes I just get lost. I don't know whether to cut, whether to go, whether to get back and playing with those two talented guys . . . it happens real fast. So, I just let [James] know that.''

Harvin, Childress Had To Be Seperated During Confrontation

MINNEAPOLIS -- A confrontation between Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and receiver Percy Harvin grew so heated Friday afternoon that coaches and players were forced to separate them to prevent a physical exchange, according to team sources.

The confrontation, which was first reported by The (Minneapolis) Star Tribune as a heated argument between the two, occurred during a light Friday afternoon practice, Harvin's first of the week after suffering a sprained ankle last Sunday against the New England Patriots. Harvin was seen limping badly during the portion of practice open to reporters.

According to sources, Childress questioned Harvin's effort during the practice. When Harvin took exception, Childress suggested Harvin submit to further testing on the ankle. The debate escalated and "was as close to physical as you can get," according to the source.

After the two were separated, according to sources, a teammate told Harvin: "You just did what a lot of us have been wanting to say for years."

Harvin had further testing on the ankle Saturday morning. He remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Derek Jeter Is A Free Agent For First Time

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter is free to talk to any team in baseball, while the New York Yankees are finally allowed to speak with Cliff Lee.

The clock has struck midnight and, as expected, Jeter and the Yankees do not yet have a deal yet to keep the captain in pinstripes. Jeter is a free agent for the first time in his career.

Even for Jeter, this is not unexpected because when a player is so close to free agency he rarely signs before he sees what is on the open market.

Jeter, of course, is a unique case because he is the captain of the Yankees and is considered in the same breath as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle as franchise icons. At 36, off his worst statistical season of his career, he is expected to return to the Bronx, but there is likely to be a disagreement between Jeter and the team about how much and how long his next deal should be.

His just-concluded contract was for $189 million for 10 seasons, the third-highest contract in the history of the game. Alex Rodriguez -- with his $252 million deal and his current $275 million to $300 million contract -- owns the two highest. Rodriguez's current contract takes him until he is 42. Jeter might want to match that, but the Yankees will likely want to restrict the deal to three or four seasons, at most.

Mariano Rivera also is a free agent, but Rivera's return seems like even more of a formality than Jeter's. The question for Rivera -- who will likely top his record $15 million for a closer -- is will he receive a one-year or two-year deal. Rivera turns 41 at the end of this month.

As for Lee, he loomed large over the Yankees' regular season and postseason and is now a central figure in their offseason. The Yankees have been interested in acquiring Lee since July, when they almost dealt for him. Instead, the Texas Rangers beat them out for Lee and then eliminated the Yankees in the ALCS.

The Yankees are considered the favorites with Texas for the rights to Lee. Lee, 32, is expected to initially ask for a contract similar to CC Sabathia's seven-year, $161 million deal. But teams like the Los Angeles Angels and even the Washington Nationals could show interest.

The Yankees will likely monitor the Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth Sweepstakes, but at the moment are looking to focus their money on pitching. If they fail to land Lee, then Crawford or Werth could become a Plan B. The Angels and Boston Red Sox are expected to be interested in the outfielders.

If the Yankees were to go after an outfielder, they would probably make a trade involving Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson or Brett Gardner. If they fail to sign Lee, they most likely turn their attention to talks with other teams and attempt to make a trade for a big-name starter.

Clippers Gauging Interest In Baron

The Clippers are exploring whether anyone has interest in acquiring point guard Baron Davis via trade, according to a report by Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

Los Angeles coach Vinny Del Negro recently criticized the veteran's conditioning and the team won their first game of the season this week with Davis out of the lineup because of a swollen left knee.

Davis has three years and $41.8 million left on his contract, including this season.

Abdul-Jabber Not So Hot On Heat

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, likes what he sees from the Lakers. He's not so sure, though, about those Las Vegas oddsmakers. Ever since the Miami Heat became the favorite to win the NBA championship next June, Abdul-Jabbar has been shaking his head. "I think it's crazy," he said Friday. "Miami doesn't have a team yet. They're still trying to find their identity. They've got a long way to go before they establish themselves. "Orlando and Boston, they've been there, and they want to get back. Miami's going to have their work cut out for them. And there's probably some other [East] teams that will emerge as the season proceeds."

I mean, he is right. You do have to build chemistry, it doesn't just happen over night and with a couple practice/ scrimmages. But it's going to take time and they will be a force sooner or later.

Lebron James: "They Could Have Done A Better Job"

Cleveland, it turns out, has some very specific ideas about what LeBron James should do.

A video making the rounds on the internet, apparently posted on YouTube by a Cleveland filmmaker, remixes James' Nike ad in which he asks "What should I do?"
The ad was a response to the backlash James provoked with his nationally televised announcement that he would sign with the Miami Heat after playing seven seasons in Cleveland.
The video portrays different Cleveland sports fans and their disgust with James.
"Boston? Game 5? We watched. You quit," one fan says in the video, referring to last season's 32-point loss in the playoffs.
Before tipoff against New Orleans on Friday night, James said he had seen the video.
"It was all right," he said. "They could have done a better job."

The video ends with a fan on the street saying "We wanted you to be who you said you'd be."
That's immediately followed by a recording of James saying: "I got a goal. And that's a huge goal and that's to bring an NBA championship here to Cleveland, and I won't stop 'til I get it."
Accompanying that is an image of the iconic ad banner with James' image and the words "We are all witnesses" on it, falling off a building.

Source: Vikings Owner Irate

Randy Moss did not appear on waivers for 24 hours because Vikings owner Zygi Wilf was furious about being circumvented by coach Brad Childress. The owner considered retaining Moss and firing Childress, according to a team source.

Childress and two team executives did not respond to emails and text messages sent by ESPN seeking comment.

Childress, according to The Star Tribune, put his job in jeopardy because he didn't follow franchise protocol and talk to Wilf before deciding to place Moss on waivers.

Childress is under contract for three more seasons. He was asked Friday if he thought he still had Wilf's support.

"My sense doesn't make any difference," Childress said. "You'd have to speak to him on that. We've always communicated very well and I haven't seen any change on that."

Moss was claimed by the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday after four games in Minnesota. Moss was acquired by the Vikings in a midseason trade with the New England Patriots.

Wilf, who lives in New Jersey, spent much of the past week observing practices and meeting individually with Vikings players. One of the players who met with Wilf told ESPN he sensed the owner was attempting to determine how much support remained for Childress among veteran players and wanted to remind them they could still make the playoffs.

Childress admitted he expects a negative reception from the Minnesota crowd on Sunday.

"I'm not crazy enough to think there wont be catcalls," he said. "That's part of the deal, that happens every time I walk on or off of a field. It's always interesting to hear what people have to say. That's part of the audience participation thing."

Moss drew the ire of some teammates before his release when he insulted the team's caterer after last Friday's practice, appeared to play half-heartedly in a loss to the Patriots and then lauded New England players and coaches while second-guessing Childress and the Vikings staff. The Star Tribune also reported Friday that Moss went to Wilf in the locker room immediately after the game and loudly encouraged him to fire Childress.

"I guess some people didn't know how to take on that personality," said veteran offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie, who played with Moss during both of his Vikings stops. "When I got here the first time, he was already here and everybody was used to him. So for him to come back to this team and the whole new coaching staff probably didn't know how to take on such a strong personality."

source: Source: Zygi Wilf considered firing Brad Childress over Randy Moss move - ESPN

Letting go of Moss to me was ridiculous. Well, I'm pretty sure the whole Vike nation will agree with me as well...ehh, well 90...okay, 100% of football fans will agree with me as well. Has Childress ever been a good coach to begin with? I mean come on, Vikings have had one of the best talented teams in the league for like the past 3-4 years now. Losing to the Eagles at home in the playoffs, I thought he was for sure going to get fired then. Next year comes, Favre comes, okay, it's nice and it worked out but would you say Favre saved his job? Now this year they become like a soap opera. 2-5? 2-5?!?!?!, Who would have expected that? Talent wins football games (and we all know the Vikings have talent) Great coaches win SB's. Childress needs to go, and I see Ziggy just waiting it out and doing it at the end of the season. The only thing that sucks is that if you (Vikings, Vike fans) draft a QB, you guys are going to have to wait for him to develop, and that might take 2-3 years. That's 2-3 years of wasting AP's prime and the rest of their mid/ late 20 year old talented players (Jared Allen 28, will be 31)

Randy Moss Wanted Brad Childress Fired

Randy Moss wanted Brad Childress out.

He went so far as to tell Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf just that.

According to a report by Chip Scoggins and Judd Zulgad in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Moss told Wilf “in no uncertain terms that Childress wasn't a good coach and should be fired” in the visitors’ locker room at Gillette Stadium in the moments following the team’s loss to the New England Patriots.

But Childress, according to the report, didn’t follow the protocol the team has in place when he made the decision on Monday to waive Moss without consulting other high-ranking members in the organization.

Wilf, who has declined interview requests this week, visited the team’s headquarters in Winter Park, Minn., this week to gauge the temperature of his 2-5 team. He huddled with Childress and also met with key veterans.

It’s believed that Childress is on thin ice at this point, a half-season removed from an appearance in the NFC Championship Game.

It will be interesting to see what direction the Vikings head during the second half of the season. They’ve been close in a handful of games that have gone the wrong direction, but that’s the ultimate losers’ lament. They need to find a way to start winning or there will be no further way to suppress the controversy.

Charlie Whitehurst Will Make NFL Debut Vs. The Giants

Charlie Whitehurst has a fun assignment for his first NFL start: The New York Giants.

The Seahawks announced on Thursday that Matt Hasselbeck has not passed the appropriate tests following the concussion he suffered last week against the Raiders. That leaves Whitehurst in line to make his first NFL appearance since 2006, when he rushed the ball twice in garbage time during his rookie season with the Chargers.

This is why Pete Caroll brought Whitehurst to Seattle. He's not a rookie or scrap heap veteran. He's a 28-year-old that Seattle gave up draft picks for and then paid $8 million over two seasons because Carroll thought there was a chance he could be the future of the position in Seattle.

"Disappointed for Matt but this is best for his health. we're really looking forward to seeing Charlie go to work!" Pete Carroll tweeted just after the news came out.

The Giants defense is playing as well as anyone in the league, and the Seahawks are rather banged up, including on the offensive line. I don't know about Florio, but I'm feeling even more confident in my Giants pick this week now.

Steelers' Troy Polamalu: Roger Goodell has too much power over NFL players

Pittsburgh Steelers S Troy Polamalu took aim at Roger Goodell on Wednesday when he alleged that the NFL commissioner has too much power over the league's players.

Polamalu's teammate, LB James Harrison, was fined $20,000 this week and met with Goodell to discuss the league's rigorous enforcement of its policy against illegal hits.

The NFL, Polamalu alleged in remarks to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has overreacted with its ramping-up of its enforcement, and he questioned the unilateral power Goodell has to discipline players:

"You know, he's got all the power; that may be part of the problem, that there needs to be some type of separation of power like our government. There should be some type of players involved in decisions over how much people should be fined or what they should be fined for, as well as coaches, as well as front office people.

"I don't think it should be just totally based on what two or three people may say who are totally away from the game. I think it should be some of the players who are currently playing."

Polamalu said he thinks players' complaints to Goodell fall on "deaf ears."

ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth agreed with Polamalu in remarks on SportsCenter. He argued that a group of people, including former players, should be involved in the process of administering discipline.

"It has to be people that aren't being paid by the league to review things," Schlereth said.

I understand that the NFL may not be like what it once was but this is a new era, and they're just trying to protect the players in the long term, which isn't bad. But then again the players are the ones that are putting themselves at risk. And there are plenty of offensive players who agree with the defensive players that the whole movement is bullshit.

Wizards Owner Will "Dougie" If Team Sells Out

Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis promises to dance the "Dougie" if the Wizards sell out a home game. Posted by Ben Golliver.

In the unlikely event that you missed it earlier this week , Wizards rookie point guard John Wall made headlines by dancing the "Dougie" during pre-game introductions before Washington's home opener against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Wall has drawn plenty of applause for his nimble feet and genuine smile, not to mention his outstanding early season play, but he has his share of detractors too , including radio host Colin Cowherd, who somehow concluded that Wall will never win an NBA title because the dance proves he loves the spotlight too much. Huh.

As for Wall's boss, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, who recently purchased the Wizards from the Pollin family? Leonsis has Wall's back completely.

So much so that he is attempting to capitalize on the good buzz surrounding Wall's boogie down by promising to get in on the action. Writing on his blog, Ted's Take , Leonsis salutes Wall's play and says he will "Dougie" if the Wizards can sell out a home game.

History is being made at Verizon Center again. A rebuild is taking shape. A wonderful star is in the making. So far - so good.

We need your help. We play this Saturday night. We need and want you to be in attendance. The team plays better in front of a sold out building. Come support the team. Click here. Off of soap box now.
When we have a total paid sellout this season, I will do the “Dougie” - I promise.

Now this is a Mark Cuban-esque 21st century NBA owner at his best. In one simple blog post, Leonsis sells tickets, connects directly with fans and potential fans, hypes up his team, and provides cover for his young superstar in the face of some unnecessary criticism. In a league where so many ownership groups are anonymous and/or out-of-touch, Leonsis is the opposite, bringing creative, fan-friendly ideas like Midnight Madness and 3-D video introductions to the table in just his first few months of ownership.

After a 2009-2010 season that was a public relations disaster for the Wizards, Leonsis is instilling the right energy when and where it is needed most.

Don't know why the Saints would do that, they're running back depth is pretty thin with just Thomas & Bush. But maybe they have a lot of faith in Ivory?

Buffet that Randy Moss trashed, giving away meals for jerseys + 8.40 lunch specials

MINNEAPOLIS -- A suburban Minneapolis restaurant is turning the tables on Randy Moss.

Gus Tinucci was catering lunch at the Minnesota Vikings' practice facility last Friday when Moss entered the locker room. He said Moss demanded to know who ordered the food and said he wouldn't feed it to his dog.

Tinucci said he got an apology from the Wilf family, which owns the Vikings. And on Friday, Tinucci's restaurant will offer free lunches to the first 50 people who come to turn in their Moss jerseys. For everyone else, the lunch buffet will be marked down to $8.40, a takeoff on the receiver's No. 84 jersey.

The Moss jerseys and cash will be donated to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The Vikings waived Moss on Tuesday, and he was claimed a day later by the Tennessee Titan, his third team this season.

It's pretty cool I guess. If you're in the Minny area, take advantage of it.
